Nairobi Region Police Criticized for Excessive Force

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has strongly condemned the Nairobi region police for allegedly disrupting peaceful protests against the Finance Bill.

According to a statement released by LSK, the police used excessive force against demonstrators, including firing live ammunition. This resulted in several injuries and the arrest of numerous protesters.

LSK President Nelson Havi said, "The actions of the police are a violation of the fundamental rights of Kenyan citizens to peacefully assemble and express their grievances. We demand that the Inspector General of Police take immediate action against those responsible."

The protests, which began on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, were sparked by concerns over tax increases and austerity measures proposed in the Finance Bill. Kenyans from all walks of life took to the streets to voice their opposition and demand that the government reconsider its economic policies.

The LSK's condemnation of the police action has been met with widespread support from civil society organizations, human rights activists, and opposition politicians. They have called on the government to respect the rule of law and ensure that protesters' rights are upheld.

In conclusion, the LSK's demand for accountability and the condemnation of excessive police force sends a clear message that citizens' rights must be protected. The use of live ammunition and the disruption of peaceful protests is a threat to democracy and the rule of law, and it should not be tolerated.
