Würzburger Kickers reach the 2. Bundesliga again

1. FC Nürnberg II wins the championship

Würzburg - Würzburger Kickers won the championship in the Regionalliga Bayern and thus made the direct return to the 2nd Bundesliga clear. The kickers beat FC Bayern Munich II 6-1 (3-1) in front of 10,000 spectators on Saturday and are no longer to be caught. The Nuremberg U23 team, who lost 2-1 at FV Illertissen, finished second.

Kickers dominate in front of a home crowd

The Würzburger Kickers immediately took control of the game in front of their home crowd and took the lead through Fabio Kaufmann after just six minutes. The Munich team equalized after 20 minutes through a penalty kick by Timo Kern, but the kickers continued to dominate the game and deservedly took a 3-1 lead by Luca Pfeiffer and Kaufmann. Heygster made it 4-1 in the 52nd minute. Kaufmann scored his third goal of the day in the 74th minute and made the final score 6-1 seven minutes later.

The Würzburger Kickers are back in the 2nd Bundesliga after only one year of absence. The kickers were relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga to the 3rd division in 2019, but were able to secure promotion back to the 2nd Bundesliga as champions of the 3rd division in 2020. The kickers have now played a total of seven seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga.

The 1. FC Nürnberg II, on the other hand, missed the championship in the Regionalliga Bayern. The Nuremberg U23 team finished the season in second place behind the Würzburger Kickers. However, the Nuremberg youngsters can still hope for promotion to the 3rd division via the relegation round. The relegation round will take place from May 25 to June 5, 2023.
